Suicide

I’m having all of the feels, or conflicting emotions after the recent suicide of a friend. It’s such a shame when a relatively healthy person decides to end their life. Mental illness, or mental injury as one of my therapist friends reframed the word, or debilitating health issues are a common denominator in suicides.

I think every human goes through challenges and/or dark periods at some point in their life. Life is hard. The will to live for most is strong. We can persevere even when faced with unsurmountable odds. How do we carry on? Everyone has their own coping mechanisms. For me, here are some of the following ways to get through life’s less shiny moments:

  • Movement: yoga, kickboxing, hiking, biking, etc
  • Reading, writing, singing, meditation, Netflix/Amazon Prime binging
  • Spending time with the people I care about.

I also remember my Mom always sharing pearls of wisdom:

“I felt sorry for the man who had no shoes until I saw the man with no feet”

“Hold fast to dreams
for if dreams die
life is a broken-winged bird
that can not fly.
Hold fast to dreams
for when dreams go
life is a barren field
frozen with snow.”

Langston Hughes
Look out for your fellow man and have compassion. You never know what someone is going through.
